October: Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is dedicated to raising awareness about breast cancer. It is an opportunity to talk openly about the disease, remember the importance of prevention and early diagnosis, and highlight the role science plays today in treating it.

Breast cancer is not a single disease. There are different types and subtypes, with different biological characteristics and different behaviors. Early detection, combined with proper diagnosis and staging, can contribute significantly to treatment. The earlier cancer is detected, the higher the survival rates and the milder the treatment can be. At an early stage, the disease is often completely curable.

The data in Europe and Cyprus

According to the European Cancer Information System (ECIS), about 1 in 11 women in Europe will develop breast cancer before the age of 74. Cyprus ranks among the countries with a high incidence of breast cancer, with over 170 new diagnoses per 100,000 women, compared to the European average of 148 cases per 100,000 women.

However, Cyprus has one of the best survival outcomes, reaching 93% and the lowest mortality rate in Europe.

These data clearly show the importance of early diagnosis and good organization of health services. Cyprus shows that with information and early access to diagnosis, outcomes are among the best in Europe.

Importance of Early Diagnosis - Awareness

•Early detection before symptoms appear

•Higher survival lifespan.

•Better Quality of Life

What you can do

Risk reduction goes through simple, everyday choices: a balanced diet, maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly, limiting alcohol and avoiding smoking. Equally important is knowing your family history and talking to your doctor about any hormonal treatments.

Screening is individualized according to age, personal and family history, and other risk factors.

Early Diagnosis Methods:

·Breast Self-Examination for any changes

·Clinical Examination by a Qualified Physician

·Radiological examination such as mammography (2D or 3D), ultrasound or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)

·Histological examination by biopsy when there is a suspicious finding to confirm the diagnosis

The combination of clinical examination, imaging and, where necessary, histological confirmation forms the basis of the comprehensive assessment.

Advances in science create new possibilities. Early diagnosis creates opportunities. And awareness is the first step. This October, let's make prevention part of our care, for ourselves and for the people we love.
